About Pratt & Whitney

Pratt & Whitney is an American aerospace manufacturer of aircraft engines for civil and military aviation applications. In addition to aircraft engines, the company produces gas turbines for industrial and power generation and marine turbines.

Pratt & Whitney began in 1925 when Frederick Rentschler, Edward Deeds, and Gordon Rentschler formed the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company with the help of Pratt & Whitney Machine Tool. Its first product, the R-1340 Wasp, was an aircraft engine that would prove to help revolutionize American aviation. After the Wasp’s success, Pratt & Whitney released the R-985 Junior, and eventually an entire series of Wasp aircraft. The Wasp series still serves as the engine for many agricultural aircraft around the world. In 1929, Pratt & Whitney left Pratt & Whitney Machine Tool, merging with Boeing and other manufacturers to form the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (UATC). Pratt & Whitney kept their name, though five years later the group was broken up and Pratt & Whitney merged with other manufacturers to form the United Aircraft Corporation. Today, Pratt & Whitney works with the United States Department of Defense and other clients as they continue their business and development. The company is now a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies.
