About TRW Inc.
TRW Inc. was a United States based manufacturer that focused on aerospace, automotive, and credit reporting businesses. As a company that lasted over a century before its acquisition, TRW Inc. has pioneered a number of technologies pertaining to electronic components, computers, system and software engineering, and integrated circuits. Additionally, TRW was ranked #57 on the 1986 Fortune 500 list, as well as had over 100,000 global employees to serve their customer base.
TRW traces its history back to the formation of the Cleveland Cap Screw Company in 1901. Initially a manufacturer of bolts with electrically welded shafts, the company soon transitioned to the production of automobile engine valves through the adaptation of existing processes. Quickly becoming the largest American valve producer, the company was rebranded as Thompson Products in 1926 and initiated acquisitions to expand upon their operations.
Leading into World War II and lasting until the end of the Korean War, Thompson Products served as a major manufacturer for aircraft engine parts and aircraft valves. During this time, Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation was formed by ex-Hughes Aircraft employees with the financial backing of Thompson Products. Together, the two companies partnered and formed a joint-venture before eventually merging in 1958 to form Thompson Ramo Wooldridge Inc. (TRW).
Leading into the present, TRW Inc. continued their efforts to diversify their operations, entering the credit reporting industry in the 1960s through acquisitions. In 2002, Northrop Grumman began a hostile bid for TRW, and competition from BAE Systems and General Dynamics followed suit. After a successful bid from Northrop Grumman, TRW was acquired. With the sale of various business units and their acquisition, TRW has been succeeded by companies such as TRW Automotive, Northrop Grumman, and Goodrich Corporation.
